The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) officially inaugurated a network of newly constructed Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations across Addis Ababa and major regional cities today.

Attended by senior government officials, executives from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, and key stakeholders, the inauguration marks a significant milestone in expanding the country’s green mobility infrastructure. The new stations are designed to address the growing demand for reliable charging facilities following Ethiopia’s recent policy shift toward electric mobility and the ban on fuel-powered private car imports.

Speaking at the ceremony, leadership from the Ethiopian Electric Utility emphasized that the project aligns with the national green economy strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and cutting the heavy foreign exchange burden spent on fuel imports. Equipped with modern fast and standard chargers, the newly launched stations are capable of servicing multiple vehicles simultaneously through a digital payment system.

Following today's launch, the utility announced plans to further expand charging infrastructure along major national highways and additional regional corridors in partnership with private sector investors.
